Unfortunately, almost every time I sign up for a new account on some sort of website, I am required to jump through various hoops to prove that I’m not a bot.
I remember when I first started seeing them being used, several years ago. It was fun. It was like a little puzzle you had to solve to prove your worth. These days, however, it’s a total chore – I’m sure they never used to be as difficult to read as they are now. Perhaps the bots got better at reading, so they made the little pictures more difficult to read. In any case, sometimes I can spend several minutes trying to discern the letters and numbers (often failing, and then having to try again on a completely new and unfamiliar picture).
And don’t even bother trying to opt for the sound version because you think it will be the easy way out. Nope. Imagine a noisy restaurant. Among the crowded tables of diners, sits a man, completely alone. Under his breath, he is muttering the magical letters and numbers you so desperately need to hear. That’s what it’s like. Completely useless!
Anyway, I came up with this comic after encountering a particularly challenging picture. Couldn’t read it, so I just accepted my fate. I suggest you do the same!

Why don’t people start making actual puzzles?

I do not like those unreadable pictures too! On sites I design, I use mathematic random question, vor example: How much is 4+5?
The best thing would be displaying simple pictures showing everyday items and asking what you see. Like a picture of a bird, and answer with ‘bird’ would suffice. A picture of a ball would make it easier for a bot, but you get the point.
But no, we have to make these CAPTCHA’s hard to read and abstract so even Picasso would have a hard time deciphering it.
